| Lure your ex back |
| 07.20.10 (8:48 am) [edit] |
|
You've just broken up with the guy you thought was 'The One'. Well, for most of us in that situation there's nothing we can really do. But if you know that you know you don't want to lose this guy, you still have hope. Try Feng Shui! No guarantee, but give it a shot. So here it goes! Open relationship Make sure the doors of your flat and your bedroom are open. Any squeaky doors and windows will put a stop on your love life and block the flow of romantic energy in your life. Clean up your bedrooms and your flat for a better flow of the energy or chi of your life. Blast from past Remove anything related to old and difficult relationships. If you still want your man back, search out all those old love letters from your previous acrimonious relationships and dump them immediately as you don't need that negative energy to impose on your present relationships. Love centre The area that represents love is the southwest area of your house. Get a compass and find it out. If the bathroom or kitchen is in that area, no problem! Just go to your bedroom and find your southwest corner. If you have any unfavorable influences in that region, it can be a reason why your man has left you. Clean it up immediately for a better flow of energy. Pair up Mandarin ducks are the best way to get your love life back on track. Get a pair of elegantly carved red jasper Mandarin ducks and place it in the southwest corner. You can also try red cornelian or even red coral stones if you cannot find the ducks. Wear citrines, amethysts and rose quartz crystals to cleanse your negative energy and attract your ex-boyfriend. Though no one guarantees that your ex will come running, hopping and skipping back into your arms, it doesn't hurt to try. Maybe in the process you might attract someone better!

| Short sleep ups risk of premature death |
| 05.05.10 (12:08 am) [edit] |
People who sleep for less than six hours each night were 12 percent more likely to die prematurely than those who get the recommended six to eight hours. The study by the University of Warwick and Federico II University Medical School, Italy, provides evidence of the direct link between short duration of sleep and an increased chance of dying prematurely. The research also notes that consistent overlong sleeping (over nine hours a night) can be a cause for concern. While, unlike short sleeping, overlong sleeping does not in itself increase the risk of death, it can be a significant marker of underlying serious and potentially fatal illnesses. The study looked at the relationship between the level of habitual duration of sleep and mortality by reviewing 16 prospective studies from Britain, the US, European and East Asian countries. The study included more than 1.3 million participants, followed up for up to 25 years, with more than 100,000 deaths recorded, said a Warwick release. Francesco Cappuccio, professor the University of Warwick and consultant physician, said: Whilst short sleep may represent a cause of ill-health, long sleep is believed to represent more an indicator of ill-health.

| Sex is good for your health |
| 04.29.10 (11:52 pm) [edit] |
If you thought that the only benefit of sex was, well, pleasure, here’s some news for you. Making love is good for adults.
And making love regularly is even better. Not only does it help you sleep well, relieve stress and burn calories, there are also several other reasons why you need to have sex more often.
Improves cardiovascular health A recent study says that men who have sex more than twice a week, have a lesser risk of getting a heart attack, than men who had sex less than once a month.
Increases immunity Regular lovemaking increases the level of the immune-boosting antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA), which in turn makes your body stronger against illnesses like the common cold and fever.
Reduces stress Stressed out with work or family problems? Don’t let it affect your performance in the bedroom. Not only will having sex improve your mood, but a study has also proven that folks who indulge in regular bedroom activities can handle stress better and are happier people.
Relieves pain If you’re using a headache as an excuse to not make love, stop doing that. Have sex instead, because when you’re about to have an orgasm, the level of the hormone oxytocin increases by five times. This endorphin actually reduces aches and pains.
Promotes longevity When one has an orgasm, a hormone called dehydroepiandrosterone is released. This improves immunity, repairs tissue and keeps the skin healthy. Men who have at least two orgasms a week live longer than men who have sex just once every few weeks.
Increases blood circulation Because your heart rate increases when you have sex, fresh blood is supplied to your organs and cells. While used blood is removed, the body also expels toxins and other materials that cause you to feel tired.
You sleep better The sleep that you get just after you’ve made love will be much more relaxed. Getting a good night’s sleep will make you feel alert and overall healthy.
Improves overall fitness If you find going to the gym mundane or working out at home a task, here’s another way to help you lose the flab and keep in shape. Regular sex will do wonders for your waistline. Half an hour of lovemaking burns more than 80 calories.
Increases your levels of Oestrogen and testosterone In men, the hormone testosterone is what makes them more passionate in the sack. Not only will it make you feel way better in bed, but it also improves your muscles and bones, keeps your heart healthy and keeps a check on your cholesterol. In women, on the other hand, the hormone oestrogene protects them against heart disease and also determines a woman’s body scent.

| Repetitive Laughter affects the body like exercise |
| 04.28.10 (4:48 pm) [edit] |
|
Results of the study, from Loma Linda University's Schools of Allied Health (SAHP) and Medicine, showed that laughing not only enhances a positive mood, but lowers stress hormones, increases immune activity, and lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, similar to moderate exercise.
In the study, 14 healthy volunteers were recruited to a three-week study to examine the effects that eustress (mirthful laughter) and distress have on modulating the key hormones that control appetite.
During the study, each subject was required to watch one 20-minute video at random that was either upsetting (distress) or humorous (eustress) in nature.
During the study, the researchers measured each subject's blood pressure and took blood samples immediately before and after watching the respective videos.
Each blood sample was separated out into its components and the liquid serum was examined for the levels of two hormones involved in appetite, leptin and ghrelin, for each time point used in the study.
When the researchers compared the hormone levels pre- and post-viewing, they found that the volunteers who watched the distressing video showed no statistically significant change in their appetite hormone levels during the 20-minutes they spent watching the video.
In contrast, the subjects who watched the humorous video had changes in blood pressure and also changes in the leptin and ghrelin levels.
Specifically, the level of leptin decreased as the level of ghrelin increased, much like the acute effect of moderate physical exercise that is often associated with increased appetite.
Dr. Lee S. Berk, a preventive care specialist and psychoneuroimmunology researcher at Loma Linda University's Schools of Allied Health (SAHP) and Medicine, said that this research does not conclude that humour increases appetite.
The ultimate reality of this research is that laughter causes a wide variety of modulation and that the body's response to repetitive laughter is similar to the effect of repetitive exercise.
The value of the research is that it may provide for those who are health care providers with new insights and understandings, and thus further potential options for patients who cannot use physical activity to normalize or enhance their appetite.

| Celebs’ fitness myths debunked |
| 04.07.10 (4:12 pm) [edit] |
|
Hollywood celebs' cod science fallacies have been debunked by some of the leading researchers.
However, Carbonated drinks have no effect on oxygen levels in the body. At rest, the body is constantly producing carbon dioxide and this amount increases during exercise. By comparison, the amount from a fizzy drink is trivial.
Heather Mills, ex-wife of Sir Paul McCartney and a former model said "Meat sits in your colon for 40 years and eventually gives you the illness you die of. But Melita Gordon, gastroenterologist at the University of Liverpool says, "Meat proteins, like all other proteins, are digested by enzymes, and absorbed in the small bowel before they ever reach the colon. Any indigestible matter is... expelled."
Again, Fergie from Black Eyed Peas had said, "I do vinegar shots. It has to be organic apple cider, unfiltered. Two tablespoons for some reason I've noticed a difference on my stomach." Lucy Jones, a dietician at the Whittington NHS Trust counters Fergie's views and says, "As attractive as it sounds, there's no magic pill, lotion or potion for a quick fix to weight loss.
"The body, including the liver, is a well-oiled detoxing machine, which will not be improved by vinegar, whether it be organic, apple cider, unfiltered, or your bog standard malt vinegar," Jones added.
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow had said, "When I'd read about what pesticides do to small animals, I thought, ‘Why would I expose my child to that?'" However, according to Professor Alan Boobis, toxicologist, Imperial College London, "Animals are exposed to doses substantially greater than those to which consumers will ever be exposed. If studies produce doubt about the safety of a pesticide, it is not approved for use."
An expert has also debunked Bond actor Roger Moore's belief that believed that eating foie gras could lead to Alzheimer's, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Dr Stuart Rulten, molecular biologist, University of Sussex debunks the myth saying, "There is no scientific evidence that eating foie gras will directly cause any of the above diseases."

| New brain nerve cells 'key to stress resilience' |
| 03.31.10 (9:58 pm) [edit] |
|
In what is being claimed as a major breakthrough, scientists have found clues to why some people are more susceptible to stress than others -- it's due to the birth of new nerve cells in the brain.
A team at Texas University has based its findings on a study of two groups of laboratory mice who were exposed to stressful events, and analysed the animals' brains after a couple of weeks.
This work shows that there is a period of time during which it may be possible to alter memories relevant to a social situation by manipulating adult-generated nerve cells in the brain.
This could eventually lead to a better understanding of why, in humans, there is an enormous variety of responses to stressful situations.
In the study, the brain cells of both groups of mice responded in similar ways after a stressful event.
But weeks later, the scientists found mice displaying social avoidance had more nerve cells in a region of the brain -- hippocampus -- that survived the stressful event than mice that were more resilient.
In fact, the mice that were more susceptible to stress exhibited enhanced neurogenesis - the birth of new nerve cells in the brain. Specifically the cells that the animals produced after a stressful event survived longer than new brain cells produced by mice that were more resilient.

|

Resolution # 1: Vow to devote 'more time' to the act. No denying that 'quickies' are great fun, but when the target is a year full of gratifying sex, nothing works better that investing quality time in the act. "Being one of the fundamental aspects of a man-woman relationship, sex deserves patience and time. But time-pressed lifestyles and busy schedules often leaves couples exhausted by the end of the day leading to a lull in their bedroom. So, from planning private vacations and early-morning sex sessions to extending foreplay in the bed, anything and everything that keeps the two of you connected for a longer time helps pep up your sexual experience.
Resolution # 2: Promise to 'experiment'
If you think experimentation is only the younger lot's cup of tea, remember that it's the older couples who benefit the most out from all the trials and tests. "Every couple has its own set of pleasure activities that they have been practicing since day one. But it's always good to explore and experiment to know what else charges up your pleasure buttons and hits them better. Try and know what turns your man on or what arouses your wife. Touch and feel each other's bodies and don't shy away from trying new techniques and positions this year. Think what you want your partner to do between the sheets and communicate your secret desires and innate fantasies the next time you are indulging in some steamy action. You never know you might just discover an all new moan zoan in your partner's body!
Resolution # 3: Pledge to revisit your sensual side
When was the last time you went out shopping for enticing night wear and sassy lingerie the way you did in the initial days of your courtship? When was the last time you turned your bedroom into a love-den to woo your partner? We are sure it's been long, with due courtesy to our busy and overtly practical schedules. Why not revisit your sensual self once again in 2009? "Feeling beautiful and getting in touch with your sensuality forms an important part of lovemaking, especially for women. If you are feeling sexy and beautiful, chances of being interested and active in sex are a lot higher than otherwise,
So, check out the lingerie stores and dig out some sensuous pieces. Also, try and pick some other passion props like perfumed body oils, scented candles, satin sheets, silk scarves etc. and put them to the best of use.

| Few Sure shot ways to burn fat, fast! |
| 03.28.10 (10:17 am) [edit] |
|
It takes great determination to lose weight. The fat has just been adding up for months or years, as the case may be. However, don't kill yourself with a mean crash diet to get into a bikini, simply follow our expert-backed tips to fall into shape.
‘How to get started' is a major cause of concern. Whether it is sweating it out at the gym or going for long jogs, it is a tough call for most fitness novices. At such a juncture it is imperative to understand your body and its fitness requirement. And accordingly zero in on a work-out routine. We take a look at five fast fat burning moves...
Cardio exercises Cardios are the best form of exercise for beginners. There is no refuting the fact that to blast calories you need to break a sweat. A lean body can never be yours without sweating out the excess flab. And cardio exercises help you achieve just that; they boost your stamina, make you energetic and flexible to take up an even rigorous fitness regime. Running on the treadmill, cross-trainer, cycling, swimming and skipping are the most popular forms of cardio. While a treadmill exercises the whole body, cross-trainers are for the hips and thighs. You can even go for the cycling option at a gym; there are two kinds of cycles, one for thighs and the other for thighs and stomach. Diet Once you have set up a routine, gradually cut down on fish, red meat, fries, butter, cheese and junk food of every kind. Take a good dose of water depending on your body requirement. Coconut water and fresh fruit juices too can be taken post meals.
Spinning One might complain of lack of variety in a spinning class, as the exercise routine can get a tad monotonous. However, spinning is a wonderful way to burn calories and keeps your muscles toned. Agreed, cycling in the open is a far viable option as it lets you enjoy the local sights and take in fresh air, but rainy season and foggy winters can put a dampener on your fitness schedule. Request your trainer to come up with varied routines to keep up the interest. At a spinning studio, with the help of background music and varied lighting, a soothing and happy atmosphere is recreated. Not to mention, spinning works best when alternated with cardio exercises. It helps lose fat and build muscles. You can do 30-45 minutes of non-stop spinning once in eight days, if you are combining it with cardio. Diet Food intake should be half of your normal diet. You can consume small portions of all kinds of food you like, but say no to fries, butter and cheese.
Trapeze workout The form of workout is named after the lesser-known trapeze muscle which all of us have, but isn't very prominent. Trapeze muscles are connected at either ends to the collar bone and hence move parts of the skeleton. Little wonder, fitness addicts and body builders sport such a neat shoulder and neck line. To chisel out your trapeze muscles, the ‘Dumbbell shrugs' and ‘Barbell shrugs' are most effective. The former flexes your side form, while the latter is for the front form. It is to be noted that trapeze exercises are not for beginners, as it requires an already lean body. A few months of rigorous cardio and spinning can have you ready for trapeze. Outside of building swoon-worthy muscles, it helps keep sinus and cervical disorders at bay. A healthy trapeze routine requires each body part be exercised twice a week. Diet A wholesome diet, but avoid greasy and junk food at any cost. Drink plenty of water, fresh fruit juices and coconut water.
Aerobics and resistance training Such an exercise routine is best practiced at a fitness club under the guidance of expert trainers who understand your fitness level better. Resistance and flexibility exercises help increase stamina, and if rigorously followed, bring you in shape. Resistance is a set of weight lifting exercises, while flexibility is for the lower body. With music in the backdrop, aerobic exercises are a fun way to burn extra fat and get fitter. It facilitates a great deal of interaction with your fellow practitioners and one could also pick up some interesting routines together. To achieve best results, do resistance workout at least thrice a week. Warm up with a set of cardio exercises such as jumping and skipping to build stamina. You burn more calories by alternating aerobics with resistance and flexibility exercises. Diet Avoid food with high carbohydrate content such as potato, banana etc. If you like eating rice, take a small portion in the afternoon. Simply keep away from all kinds of fried stuff.
Pilates Pilates is also a kind of aerobic exercise which entails a whole set of routines on the floor - on a mat. Group classes are conducted at a fitness club, where the trainer shows new routines on a regular basis, depending on the ability of the students. After a basic two-day training, the body status of the student is decided and a goal is fixed for the week. Pilates exercises the whole body and burns calories. There are as many as one hundred routines for the abs only. While you are free to buy tapes and practice Pilates in your living room, the knowledge of a live trainer and his ability to access your body strength cannot be negated either. Ideally, about four kilograms a month is the healthiest way to shed weight. Diet A wholesome diet, but avoid greasy and junk food at any cost. Drink plenty of water, juices and coconut water. Not to mention, carbohydrate-rich food should be taken only occasionally.
Did you know, to lose a kilo you need to burn 7700 calories! Time you slipped into your track pants and broke some sweat.

| Stay fit with a hot cup of coffee |
| 03.22.10 (9:57 am) [edit] |
|
A steaming hot cup of coffee in the morning can actually do wonders for your health. And now two new studies have provided more support to the drink's benefits.
Touted as 'the devil's brew,' coffee contains several nutrients (eg, calcium) as well as hundreds of potentially biologically active compounds (eg, polyphenols) that may promote health.
For instance, observational studies have suggested a beneficial link between coffee consumption and type 2 diabetes. Two studies have lent additional information concerning the potential health benefits of coffee. These studies provide additional support for the emerging health benefits of coffee.
Rigorous clinical intervention trials will be needed to understand more fully the biological mechanisms. The studies by Kempf and Sartorelli "add to a growing literature suggesting that my steaming cup of morning coffee might help me stay healthy," said ASN spokesperson Dr Shelley McGuire.
"I'm a research scientist, but I still trust that foods and beverages which have been part of our culture for generations are probably good for us, or at least they're probably not bad for us in moderation! Of particular interest is the well-controlled clinical trial that suggests coffee can lower chronic inflammation and even raise our 'good' cholesterol. I for one will enjoy my coffee even more in the weeks to come," she added.

| Tricks to bigger orgasms......!!!!!!! |
| 03.21.10 (11:33 am) [edit] |
|
While majority of couples wish to have extended massive orgasm (EMO), not everybody comes down to experiencing these repeated orgasmic waves.
Lovers experiencing one of these massive orgasms have reported enjoying more of life's joys in general, becoming nicer and more generous in their relationship.
An EMO can last minutes or hours, offering up blissful sensations at increasing intensities, reports Fox News.
And here are the tricks of this tantalizing trade:
1. Truly recognize your pleasure You want to immediately approve of your present sensations. This starts before you even get in the sack by overcoming anxieties you have about sex. This may require identifying limitations you've been taught about sex, like how you're supposed to respond (or not respond). You need to then challenge any social conditioning that impedes upon your response.
Ridding yourself of the uninvited "others" in your bed will enable you to solely focus on the orgasmic sensations, including ones that come from simply anticipating action.
2. Learn to relax Lovers have the tendency to tense up during sexual excitement, which is not conducive to extended orgasm. You need to be able to surrender your nervous system during genital stimulation. It's this letting go of tension that allows you to embrace your pleasure.
3. Get in the know The more we know about our bodies, sex, and sexual response, the better we can recognize sensations, the more we can lose ourselves in them. Become knowledgeable about sexual response, sexual anatomy, and erotic techniques.
4. Give yourselves time for pleasuring Lovers may stimulate each other by fantasizing out loud, taking your time getting to the genitals and hot spots. Teasing allows for greater energy awareness and arousal, and these are what make the experience ultimately so mind-blowing.
5. Touch for pleasure You can show your partner that you are into the moment by informing them about what you are going to do so he or she can surrender more easily. Highlighting a lover's physical responses further enables them to tune into the sensations.
6. Learn to channel your energy You want to get out of your head, directing your energy to your groin. This will make for more explosive results, plus help you to further tune into your sexual response.
7. Become an effective communicator To amplify things up, you may need to request changes that will intensify your pleasure if you're the receiver. As the giver, you may need to ask for feedback or direction. In either case, asking for more will help you to feel more. Giving approval can do wonders for a lover's ego.
8. Develop your pelvic floor muscles Exercising your pubbococcygeus (PC) muscle will put you more in tune with your sexual response. It's also what makes for more powerful orgasms.
9. Have plenty of lubricant handy As you will be loving for the long-haul, make sure you avoid the friction, pain, and discomfort that can result from working each other raw by using lube.
10. Do away with any drive-thru mentality Having an EMO isn't like going for fast food. One can't go into it thinking instant gratification. Instead, approach it as though training for a sport.

| Men V/s Women |
| 03.20.10 (9:53 am) [edit] |
Women score over men in memory testA new study has confirmed what many men already knew: women's memory is better than men's.
In the University of London study, which included 9,600 people in their 50s, it was found that middle-aged women have better memories than men. In the first experiment, volunteers test listened to 10 words and were given two minutes to recall as many as possible. The second test required them to list the same 10 words about five minutes later.
Females scored almost 5% more than men in the first test and nearly 8% more in the second. In another test, which involved naming as many animals as possible in one minute, men and women had identical scores. Non-smokers, including ex-smokers, also outscored smokers in the first of the 'word recall' tests.

| Protein that stops breast cancer spread found |
| 03.19.10 (7:57 am) [edit] |
|
In what could be claimed a major breakthrough against breast cancer, scientists have discovered a protein which could stop tumours from growing and spreading.
A team, led by the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, has identified the protein, BRD7, a discovery which may pave the way for potential new treatments to combat breast cancer that affects millions of women worldwide.
According to the scientists, the protein activates an anti-cancer gene, P53, which is already known to combat breast and other tumours.
Without the protein, the gene cannot function to stop tumours spreading. The tumour suppressor P53 gene, which is present in all people, is implicated in up to half of all tumours.
In their research, the scientists, led by Professor Reuven Agami, found that the protein BRD7 activates P53 and could suppress the development of breast cancer, the Daily Express reported.
According to Agami, although it is not clear how BRD7 can prevent the formation of a tumour, it is known that it is not always present in breast cancer. He found that BRD7 activates P53, but when it is not present healthy cells can develop into a tumour. "I think we have got more understanding of how breast tumours develop," Prof Agami said. The findings, published in the Nature Cell Biology journal, have been welcomed by cancer experts.
Caitlin Palframan of Breakthrough Breast Cancer said: "This research is very interesting because it identifies for the first time that this protein could have a role to play in a significant proportion of breast and other cancers.
"(However) further studies are now needed to confirm this protein's role in cancer before it could be considered a potential target for new treatments."

| Improper sleep affects kids learning ability. |
| 07.05.08 (8:32 am) [edit] |
Lack of sleep can adversely affect the ability of kids to learn and interact at school, according to new study. The new survey led by Melbourne researchers has revealed that nearly a quarter of children aged six and seven have poor sleeping habits, which has a strong effect on their health, behaviour and learning ability. Children are able to make the transition well if they are able to interact with peers and teachers and concentrate in class and take on the workload. If you have enough sleep, you have enough concentration ... the brain is still growing, they are still taking in a lot of information. Some might say it's an overwhelming amount of information so the brain needs to be optimal. If you don't get enough sleep, that's something you are really missing out on. The team from the Centre for Community Child Health at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute studied almost 4500 children, whose sleep behaviour was recorded at the age four to five and again at six to seven. About one-third of children reported poor sleep habits. In another survey, about 23 per cent of the children were reported to have sleep problems. About 6 per cent were classified as moderate or severe. The problems included children who were unhappy to sleep alone, reluctance to go to bed, restless sleep and waking during the night. However, compared to the first survey about 10 per cent had resolved their problems, while about 3 per cent had continued to sleep badly and another 3 per cent developed new problems. If the child has a persistent sleep problem then their outcomes will be worse. And if they have a resolving sleep problem, and that's treated or just naturally goes away, then their outcomes will improve. They won't be as good as if they had no sleep problems at all, but they did show a remarkable improvement.

| World's fattest nation is Australia |
| 06.21.08 (5:09 am) [edit] |
Australia now hails to be the world's fattest nation with 26% of its adults being classified as obese, according to a new report released here on Friday.
The report "Australia's Future Fat Bomb" was undertaken by the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes
The alarming new figures mean the nation has officially overtaken US having 25% obesity rate. "That, unfortunately, makes us the heavyweight champions, a title we don't really want," Simon Stewart, Institute's head of preventative cardiology, said.
"As we send our athletes off to the Olympics, let's reflect on the fact that we would win the gold medal now in the world fat Olympics if there were such a thing," he added. According to the report, some 1.5 million middle-aged Australians are obese, a figure the report predicts will result in an additional 700,000 cardiovascular-related hospital admissions in the next 20 years. Institute, and revealed that some 4 million Australian adults are obese.

| Cloning of hair to treat baldness. |
| 06.02.08 (2:58 am) [edit] |
If clumps of your hair suddenly start falling out due to a common form of premature baldness, please don't fret -- scientists have pioneered a treatment to clone hair. According to them, the technique, known as follicular cell implantation, works by replicating remaining hair strands and it could eventually help bald people to regain a full head of their own hair, The Daily Telegraph reported. In fact, the technique has the potential to re-grow a limitless supply hair for individuals who have become bald during cancer treatment, from suffering severe burns, or the onset of age, the researchers said. However, the treatment may require more than 1,000 tiny injections to produce that number of hair in extensively bald patients, but it promises to be quicker and less invasive than current hair transplant techniques. The procedure is being developed by Intercytex, a British company based in Manchester, which is among many competing to find a cure for hair loss -- a condition which affects 40 per cent of men over 50. Trial results have indicated that the cell therapy can increase hair count in at least two thirds of patients after six months, and four out of five if the scalp is stimulated beforehand through gentle abrasions which encourage growth. The therapy could be made available to patients within five years, the researchers hoped.

| Doubts about "'technical virginity'". |
| 05.24.08 (11:06 am) [edit] |
|
A survey examining sexual practices of US teens has undercut the notion that many engage in oral sex rather than intercourse to stay "technically" virgins. The findings, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, were based on answers by 2,271 females and males age 15 to 19 in 2002 in response to a government survey. The researchers found about 55% of the teens said they had engaged in oral sex but that this practice was far more common among those who also had engaged in vaginal sex. Teens said they began vaginal and oral sex at roughly the same time - by six months after first vaginal intercourse, 82% had also engaged in oral sex, according to the study. "There is a widespread belief that teens engage in nonvaginal forms of sex, especially oral sex, as a way to be sexually active while still claiming that, technically, they are virgins," Laura Lindberg of the Guttmacher Institute in New York, who led the study, said in a statement. "However, our research shows that this supposed substitution of oral sex for vaginal sex is largely a myth. There is no good evidence that teens who have not had intercourse engage in oral sex with a series of partners." The Guttmacher Institute studies sexual and reproductive health issues. About one in 10 of the teens said they had engaged in anal sex. These teens were far more likely to have also engaged in vaginal sex. "Teens of white ethnicity and higher socioeconomic status were more likely than their peers to have ever had oral or anal sex," the researchers wrote.

| Now..............Don't drink too much water: Study |
| 04.03.08 (4:39 am) [edit] |
There is no clearcut scientific rationale for the average healthy individual to drink a lot of water and it may be downright harmful according to two kidney experts. Drinking a lot of water is claimed to be helpful for everything from clearing toxins and keeping organs in tip-top shape to keeping weight off and improving skin tone. At best, however, the evidence to back up these claims is weak, according to a new scientific review published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology . "There is what I call an urban myth that drinking a lot of water is a healthy thing to do and it leads to people toting around plastic water bottles all day drinking water," Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia said. "The source of this is the complementary and alternative medicine worlds. If you go on the internet and look up water-drinking and its health implications, that's what you encounter," Goldfarb said. As a kidney specialist, Goldfarb is interested in how the kidney handles fluids, which prompted him and colleague Dr. Dan Negoianu to review the scientific literature on the benefits of drinking water. In doing so, the researchers debunked four myths. One is that drinking a lot of water suppresses appetite. "Many people drink water before and during the meal to try to suppress their appetite," Goldfarb explained, yet there is "no consistent evidence" that water suppresses appetite. "Because you absorb water so quickly and it moves through the GI tract so quickly, it probably doesn't fill you up the way people have proposed, nor does it lead to the release of hormones which suppress appetite as far as we know," the researcher said. The second myth is that filling up on water flushes toxins from the body. "In fact, that is not how the kidney works," Goldfarb said. "When you drink a lot of water you end up having a larger volume of urine but don't necessarily increase the excretion of various constituents of the urine." The third myth is that it reduces headaches. It does not, according to the evidence. The fourth myth is that water drinking improves your skin. "There are no data to suggest that it actually improves the water content of the skin," Goldfarb said. Goldfarb and Negoianu did find solid evidence that people living in hot, dry climates, as well as some athletes, have an increased need for water, and people with certain diseases like kidney stones may benefit from increased water intake -- but no such data exist for average, healthy individuals. Furthermore, there are a couple of circumstances where drinking a lot of water may be actually unhealthy. "In long-distance runners, for example, more harm is done by long distance runners over-drinking during races than by long distance runners who under-drink," Goldfarb explained. He also cited the case of a woman who developed swelling of the brain and died when she drank water continuously and very rapidly for several minutes as part of a contest. Goldfarb also said there is no rational basis for the widespread belief that people need to drink eight glasses of water a day, and it is unclear where this recommendation came from.

| Pill can also help women conceive |
| 03.25.08 (7:13 am) [edit] |
|
For decades, women have been using the pill to not get pregnant. However, for women who do want a baby but are finding it difficult to conceive, the very same contraceptive may be a boon, say researchers at Tel Aviv University.
On a study conducted on 1,800 women at the Infertility and IVF Unit at the Helen Schneider Hospital for Women, Rabin Medical Centre, researchers led by Dr. Haim Pinkas, found that a two-week intervention treatment using a standard low-dose birth control pill can help time egg harvesting - making the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) more convenient for doctor and patient.
According to clinicians, the ability to time the IVF process is also crucial to successfully conceiving.
"One of the main drawbacks in treating infertility is timing a woman's body with the clinic's schedule, so we can get as many mature eggs as possible. IVF clinics can be extremely busy," said Dr. Pinkas.
Normally doctors start the IVF treatment from the moment a woman gets her period.
Now, the researchers have found that using birth control pills, for 10-14 days after a period, allows the treatment to be adjusted without compromising the "ovarian response to stimulation."
This way, egg-harvesting can fall on a date mutually convenient to both the clinician and patient.
"With a proven and safe method for timing when a woman can undergo therapy, there is a lot less stress placed on the physicians' shoulders too," Dr. Pinkas said.
The IVF process can be very stressful. Adding to that stress is the timing issue. Women need to be able to get on with their lives. This treatment makes it possible.
Though the study is not the first to investigate the use of the pill in IVF, but it is the largest one performed so far.

| Pregnancy of teens: A threat to mankind |
| 03.14.08 (6:54 am) [edit] |
A World Health Organisation academic has branded unwanted teenage pregnancies following bouts of binge drinking the "greatest threat to mankind", saying that it is contributing to the world's unsustainable population growth. Every single week a new city of 1.7 million could be created, and the current global population growth is unsustainable. Each year, there are around 80 million unwanted pregnancies and 30 million of these are aborted. The inconvenient truth is, the world is already overpopulated and soon we may experience shortages of food and water. The reckless alcohol consumption for the rise in unwanted teenage pregnancies. Alcohol causes more unwanted teenage pregnancies than anything else according to study.

| Training of Weight is good for diabetics. |
| 03.09.08 (6:48 am) [edit] |
Fifteen minutes of resistance exercise - light weight training, four times a week - can help improve insulin resistance, blood glucose and lower bad cholesterol in Indians, suffering from Type 2 diabetes. In a three-month study conducted by a team of doctors from Fortis, AIIMS and Maulana Azad Medical College, 30 diabetics were found to tremendously benefit from light weight training that worked to build muscle on their shoulders, biceps, finger grip, hip, knee and muscle around their heel. The doctors, who have reported their finding in the March issue of the international journal "Diabetes Care", found that fasting glucose decreased by 26.5% in the subjects. While total cholesterol levels decreased by 9%, triglyceride - the chemical form in which most fat exists in body and is associated with increased risk of heart disease - decreased by 20%. Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) - one of the three major types of blood cholesterol considered bad as it's elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease - also decreased by 32%. For the study, doctors recruited 30 diabetics - 22 men and 8 women - aged 24-50 years with an average body mass index (BMI) of 24 to start a resistance exercise regime. They started with lifting 1 kg-3 kg weight, 20 times for each of the 6 muscles everyday, three days under supervision of a physiotherapist and four days at home. Weights were then increased by 0.5 kg every week. Subcutaneous fat - fat found just beneath the skin, which is a major culprit behind making Indians obese - was measured at 8 sites in the body. Experts say that during exercise, large muscles in our arms, legs and hips are constantly moved that leads to the body taking in more oxygen by breathing faster and deeper, pumping blood more forcefully, increasing the diameter and number of small blood vessels and releases endorphins.Experts say in diabetes, weight training helps increase glucose uptake by the muscles and helps the body store glucose.
