Exercise makes you younger by 9 yrs
01.29.08 (11:11 am)   [edit]
Exercise may hold the key to youth, according to a recent study, which showed people who keep fit are up to nine years biologically younger than those who do not.

The study of 2,401 twins found that a sedentary lifestyle raises the risk of a range of problems from heart disease to cancer and appears to play a key role in the ageing process.

It all boils down to the length of structures called telomeres - which protect the DNA on the chromosomes.

Many studies have shown telomeres get shorter over time, suggesting the cells are ageing or dying. The study, which extracted a DNA sample from their volunteers, found people who exercised more each week had longer telomeres.

According to exercise lowers the risk of a range of problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
The study found people who exercised vigorously 3 hours each week had longer telomeres and were biologically 9 years younger than people who did under 15 minutes.

Laugh Wins After All.............
01.26.08 (6:19 am)   [edit]
It seems that the saying 'Laughter is the best medicine' really is true for US researchers in a new study have shown that humour has its effects in all spheres of life. A study, conducted by Melissa B Wanzer, professor of communication studies at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, has shown that humour helps medical professionals cope with difficult jobs.

In the study, the researcher also looked at the how humour affects the elderly and how it can increase communication in the workplace and in the classroom.

Wanzer, in her large-scale study, asked the med professionals how they provided care for terminally ill people and manage to come back to work each day. The health care experts replied that it was humour that made them do so.

Wanzer has also found humour to be beneficial in other areas as well.

The researchers found that humour is an effective way to cope with on-the-job stress - again, when used appropriately.

In another study, Wanzer found that aging adults who used humour more frequently reported greater coping efficacy, which led to greater life satisfaction. Wanzer's research also shows that students report learning more from teachers who use humour effectively.

Rooms that tell you what to wear
01.25.08 (9:30 am)   [edit]

You may soon not have to drag a reluctant loved one around when out shopping for clothes, thanks to 'Intelligent Fitting rooms' that can help you compare your dressing choices with personal preferences and fashion trends.

The new system developed by Zhang with Takashi Matsumoto of Keio University and Juan Liu, Maurice Chu and Bo Begole of PARC in Palo Alto, California can help shoppers judge their dressing room choices before purchase and can suggest alternative styles.

The system improves (a shopper's) confidence in the decision-making process and improves their shopping experience.

The dressing room equipped with cameras, machine learning generates an interactive display and intelligent clothes retrieval. In the 'Smart fitting' room the shopper is surrounded by mirrors. In the front, she sees herself in the actual mirror. The left mirror displays her wearing the outfit tried previously, which helps the shopper to compare multiple outfits at the same time.

To right mirror displays images of other people wearing similar clothes or completely different styles that gives the shopper information about the social context of her choice and provide her alternative styles.

Friendly bacteria may lower fat:Study
01.21.08 (9:55 am)   [edit]

A new study in mice has revealed that adding 'friendly' bacteria to the diet might one day help in reducing fat absorption.

For the study, a   mice was used.

The mice was fed with strains of 'probiotic' Lactobacillus , whose gut microbes had been replaced by those that usually live in the human gut.

The researcher had different bile acids from the norm, favouring enzymes that reduce the amount of fat digested.

More fat is available for the microbes, and you then 'poo' the microbes out.

The researchers said that the changes may only reduce fat absorption by a little, but this could have an impact on obesity if sustained over several years.

Hot cup of coffee for space tourists
01.19.08 (2:33 am)   [edit]
A chemical engineer at the University of New Brunswick, Canada, has come up with an idea to keep drinks flowing in space.

Brian Lowry says that "cups" made from corkscrews of ribbon-like material may one day enable space tourists to drink coffee.

The researcher says that holding liquids this way may solve the tricky problem of getting fluid out of an open container in microgravity. Nanotechnologists working with tiny samples of liquid may also find this approach useful, he adds.

Gravity on Earth lets liquids to pour from an open container, but it may require pumping or sucking through a straw in microgravity.

Many times, the fluid breaks up into globules in space due to the way pressure inside the liquid interacts with the shape of most containers.

"You can withdraw it up to a point, but then end up with fluid sticking around the bottom of the glass. You have to chase around to get it all out," New Scientist magazine quoted Lowry as saying.

He says that this impact is problematic for space engineering systems, which need to transport liquids to keep spacecraft running smoothly, also.

The normal solution is to pressurise containers so that liquid is driven out whenever a vent is opened, he adds.

An alternative solution can be the use of helical shapes, says Lowry, who has analysed this idea with his colleague Heather-Jean May, another researcher from the University of New Brunswick.

The researchers say that such forms may function much better as containers for holding fluids in microgravity, for surface tension holds liquid inside the coil and the properties of the shape's surface allow fluid to be sucked out in one go.

As liquid is drawn out of the helical containers, the remaining fluid redistributes along the spiralling support. This may enable astronauts to drain a helix holding a drink in a single draught.

"They are like open tanks, so you can drain fluid or add fluid. It's an odd geometry, but they behave very much like coffee cups," says Lowry.

The idea of using a helix originally came from David Thiessen at Washington State University, who was inspired by a notebook binding.

Lowry's team used mathematical models work out the ideal helix for space containers. The researchers tested the candidates in a tank that simulated microgravity, using two different liquids of equal density.

They hope that their designs will one day be tested in true microgravity.
