Pill can also help women conceive
03.25.08 (7:13 am) [edit]
|
For decades, women have been using the pill to not get pregnant. However, for women who do want a baby but are finding it difficult to conceive, the very same contraceptive may be a boon, say researchers at Tel Aviv University.
On a study conducted on 1,800 women at the Infertility and IVF Unit at the Helen Schneider Hospital for Women, Rabin Medical Centre, researchers led by Dr. Haim Pinkas, found that a two-week intervention treatment using a standard low-dose birth control pill can help time egg harvesting - making the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) more convenient for doctor and patient.
According to clinicians, the ability to time the IVF process is also crucial to successfully conceiving.
"One of the main drawbacks in treating infertility is timing a woman's body with the clinic's schedule, so we can get as many mature eggs as possible. IVF clinics can be extremely busy," said Dr. Pinkas.
Normally doctors start the IVF treatment from the moment a woman gets her period.
Now, the researchers have found that using birth control pills, for 10-14 days after a period, allows the treatment to be adjusted without compromising the "ovarian response to stimulation."
This way, egg-harvesting can fall on a date mutually convenient to both the clinician and patient.
"With a proven and safe method for timing when a woman can undergo therapy, there is a lot less stress placed on the physicians' shoulders too," Dr. Pinkas said.
The IVF process can be very stressful. Adding to that stress is the timing issue. Women need to be able to get on with their lives. This treatment makes it possible.
Though the study is not the first to investigate the use of the pill in IVF, but it is the largest one performed so far.

Pregnancy of teens: A threat to mankind
03.14.08 (6:54 am) [edit]
A World Health Organisation academic has branded unwanted teenage pregnancies following bouts of binge drinking the "greatest threat to mankind", saying that it is contributing to the world's unsustainable population growth. Every single week a new city of 1.7 million could be created, and the current global population growth is unsustainable. Each year, there are around 80 million unwanted pregnancies and 30 million of these are aborted. The inconvenient truth is, the world is already overpopulated and soon we may experience shortages of food and water. The reckless alcohol consumption for the rise in unwanted teenage pregnancies. Alcohol causes more unwanted teenage pregnancies than anything else according to study.

Training of Weight is good for diabetics.
03.09.08 (6:48 am) [edit]
Fifteen minutes of resistance exercise - light weight training, four times a week - can help improve insulin resistance, blood glucose and lower bad cholesterol in Indians, suffering from Type 2 diabetes. In a three-month study conducted by a team of doctors from Fortis, AIIMS and Maulana Azad Medical College, 30 diabetics were found to tremendously benefit from light weight training that worked to build muscle on their shoulders, biceps, finger grip, hip, knee and muscle around their heel. The doctors, who have reported their finding in the March issue of the international journal "Diabetes Care", found that fasting glucose decreased by 26.5% in the subjects. While total cholesterol levels decreased by 9%, triglyceride - the chemical form in which most fat exists in body and is associated with increased risk of heart disease - decreased by 20%. Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) - one of the three major types of blood cholesterol considered bad as it's elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease - also decreased by 32%. For the study, doctors recruited 30 diabetics - 22 men and 8 women - aged 24-50 years with an average body mass index (BMI) of 24 to start a resistance exercise regime. They started with lifting 1 kg-3 kg weight, 20 times for each of the 6 muscles everyday, three days under supervision of a physiotherapist and four days at home. Weights were then increased by 0.5 kg every week. Subcutaneous fat - fat found just beneath the skin, which is a major culprit behind making Indians obese - was measured at 8 sites in the body. Experts say that during exercise, large muscles in our arms, legs and hips are constantly moved that leads to the body taking in more oxygen by breathing faster and deeper, pumping blood more forcefully, increasing the diameter and number of small blood vessels and releases endorphins.Experts say in diabetes, weight training helps increase glucose uptake by the muscles and helps the body store glucose.
